Balloons, Nascars, & Rats, Oh My

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

I was watching the latest Nascar race this past Sunday, and much to my surprise, I noticed yet another avenue for ambient media to make its mark. Beyond the obvious corporate sponsorships smeared across all of the cars, I noticed that several pit crew members were looking up in the sky at regular intervals. It seems as though one of the sponsors wasn’t content to simply let his car tool around the track at one hundred eighty miles an hour. No, there high in the sky was yet another ambient media tool floating along. I couldn’t make out whether it was Goodyear or not, but it looked like a blimp tugging along a sign advertising automobile tires. After the race, I went out for some ice cream. Once again I was confronted with some ambient media advertising. This time, though, I’m not sure if the message being sent was supposed to get me to buy something or just get a message out. As I was passing a local box-store being built, I saw four or five men picketing the contractor for using non-union workers. Along side of them was a huge ten foot tall menacing looking rat. Apparently, the union workers were sending the notion that the non-union laborers were rats! As I said, not sure what the ultimate good of that media buying ad campaign was – the construction will go on with or without the rat, but it made me think. Just about everywhere you look, companies, individuals, and even unions are utilizing ambient media through companies like Buy Now Media to impress their messages on the rest of us!
